Maddie Klitz Essays - , Term Papers, Research Papers

Maddie Klitz 05-03-17 English second Best Takeaway from Auburn In my four years at Auburn I would need to state my most significant takeaway was by and large separated of Student Council. I joined understudy board my sophomore year at the suggestion of a previous companion. I wasn't exceptionally included when I previously joined on the grounds that I felt like an outcast. As the year went on I started to assume a basic job on the committee as Media Consultant. Toward the finish of year we lost our consultant however Mr. Basque stepped in. Junior year turned into a remaking year as Mr. Basque needed to begin without any preparation to make our chamber separated of something larger;I became Vice President while Eunice became President. A year ago was truly when I felt that administration was something I wa nted to get familiar with . Understudy Council turned into the thing I anticipated most at school, I was encircled by kids who had a similar vision as I made; this school some place that we would all be able to have a sense of security and have a ton of fun. I arranged the sum of homecoming a year ago and that was the point at which I understood how little rest the human body needs to work. In view of understudy gathering I have understood that reality many occasions. A year ago we started red lace week, Breakfast with Santa, winter formal, Easter egg chase, and educator thankfulness week at Auburn. Coppery likewise turned into an individual from the Illinois Association of Student Councils (IASC) and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). I went to my first LEADership meeting in Chicago and it was an empowering experience. Three days encompassed by S tudent C ouncil and NHS's from around the globe, I adapted so a lot and returned realizing that I needed to make our board separated of something bigger. I finished a year ago with going to the IASC show to choose the following year's state official board and turning out to be leader of our own S tudent C ouncil. I at long last felt as if I had a pl ace some place in this school, senior year has been an impact all on account of this one extracurricular action. I again had the chance to design a homecoming I wa s glad for, everything about affirmed by me and in spite of the fact that I was depleted by the move the criticism got made everything justified, despite all the trouble. I had the option to be a piece of a gathering of children focused on this school and tasks I put before them. After the finish of our exceptionally fruitful Breakfast with Santa understudy gathering was welcome to go to the group building winter retreat for our North Central District (NCD). I had the option to become more acquainted with and coordinate with schools in our general vicinity, which demonstrated exactly how associated this basic extracurricular truly is. Going to my second LEAD gathering with a significantly bigger and submitted gathering of understudies was another extraordinary experience. I had the option to connect with considerably more individuals and find old companions from such a significant number of parts of the nation, including kids I had met at IASC and NCD. I am presently finishing off my year as president and it has been stunning from my point of view as well as from all the positive messages I've gotten for this present year. I went to my last IASC gathering a week ago and it was a clashing second. Reddish was chosen as an Illinois S tate H onor C ouncil and to have the state meeting in 2019, and I couldn' t be progressively glad for my counsel. At this gathering I was additionally perceived alongside four Student Council peers from around the state to get the column grant, my specific column was administration and devotion and I was unable to have been increasingly glad for myself. The most recent three years S tudent C ouncil has gotten something beyond a club for me; it's become a lifestyle. My counselor has become my subsequent dad and a nearby family companion of my folks. My kindred individuals have become my broken kin and my VP this year, Daybreon Leach, has become my other a large portion of that keeps me grounded regardless of how focused on I get. The takeaway from Student Council isn't only the authority and correspondence

CSS Preprocessor Issues - Can we handle them Wisely

CSS Preprocessor Issues - Can we handle them Wisely Despite the popularity of CSS pre-processors, it has been found that a majority of developers who are writing CSS are actually writing in a specific kind of language that transpiles into CSS. Hence, this has posed as a visible disadvantage of using a CSS pre-processor. Reading this post will make you familiar with some of the well-known pros of CSS pre-processor and we'll also find whether there are techniques of handling the same in a perfect way. Sass- A utility with a darker side Sass serves as an authoring tool, a configuration manager, framework and a transform and build tool. Although Sass has been quite successful in offering good support for minification, output formatting, concatenation and source maps, it comes with a major drawback. An unintelligent use of Sass can easily result in unwanted CSS. It is important to note that Sass has a malevolence which tends to manifest each time its yielded without a deep understanding or proper attention. Hence it is essential to avoid the overzealous use of Sass' @extend feature. Moreover, immoderate nesting can also lead to overlong, abstruse and over specific selectors. A potential increase in the number of steps involved in the development life cycle Since the use of CSS pre-processors won't expect you to deploy the .less or .styl files, you'll need to have an additional step in the development life-cycle wherein the .css stylesheet is being generated. This extra step can considerably slow down the development pace. Fortunately, we have an easy access to some stunning tools like CodeKit or Grunt which will auto-compile the Stylus files to CSS. While such tools come with logical defaults, it is essential to pay special attention to their effective configuration. For example, on choosing Grunt, don't forget to check its 'Getting Started' guide so as to gather helpful insights on installation and use of Grunt plugins. Too many syntaxes create compatibility issues It is essential to know that each CSS Preprocessor comes with a different syntax. Even though some of the preprocessor features might overlap, they are being implemented differently. Moreover, with different syntaxes associated with different pre-processors, it becomes quite tedious to switch from one project to another wherein you're supposed to have a different styling syntax. For instance, on finding that a Stylus syntax is compatible with a LESS file, you'll be required to write the styles twice-leading to increased project time. File Size of resultant CSS is way too different from what you are expecting Unlike the case of writing CSS in a low-level styling language, writing it using a pre-processor will generate a CSS which will not be as small as you think it to be while you're busy editing the CSS. Well, there are multiple reasons for this. Some of the most prominent ones are explained below: You may opt for lopping in a CSS pre-processor and generate n items wherein only one is visible. All the remaining items are hence listed in the resultant, static CSS file. The final CSS has a flattened hierarchy with a tree of selectors duplicated for each individual selector. While using some specific CSS pre-processors, you can do away with writing the vendor prefixes. While this can save you some valuable project time, you might forget that a single attribute would be expanding into 5 or 6 within the final CSS. Finding a sigh of relief via Post-Processors Unlike the case of pre-processors which come with distinct syntaxes, the post-processors feed on the original CSS stylesheet. These post-processors act like polyfills, allowing you to write the to-spec CSS which would work for your web development project. There are chances that you might be using a post-processor adjacent to your pre-processor without actually being aware about it. The very renowned autoprefixer tool is indeed a post-processor which allows you to fetch the CSS and add all the vendor prefixes so as to make the website work in multiple browsers. In contrast to the functioning of the pre-processors, a majority of post-processors(especially the ones written using a plugin approach) play a vital role in auto-generating the inline image data. That means, you are free to choose any of the modular plugins that are required for transforming your CSS. That's it for now! Conclusion A thoughtful understanding of pros associated with CSS pre-processors is something that will aid you in creating excellent things for the internet. Here's hoping my post would have helped you in learning quite a lot on this topic. My Emerging Philosophy of Education - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 6 Words: 1662 Downloads: 8 Date added: 2019/06/24 Category Education Essay Level High school Topics: Philosophy Of Education Essay Did you like this example? I believe that many aspects of my first semester as an undergraduate student in the University of Limerick have contributed to my emerging philosophy of education. From attending lectures, participating in educational tutorials and reflecting upon the designated readings. I have developed a substantial understanding towards the thought process of what it takes to be a successful educator. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "My Emerging Philosophy of Education" essay for you Create order It was clear to me from the outset of this semester that I will have to forge my own personalised philosophy of education. I have gained knowledge and reflected on the thoughts and ideologies of key philosophers that I feel I now have a deeper understanding of what education is and have begun the journey of realising what kind of educator I believe would lead to me having the ability to teach students in the most effective way possible. Firstly I would describe education itself as the passing on of knowledge and skills to people in different ways, while also maintaining the path of a learner as there is always new knowledge to be gained (O Connor, 2018, LL05). This description came as a result of my reflections during week 05 of this module as I resonated deeply with the ideologies that Dewey expresses in Experience and Education (Dewey, 1938). I strongly agree with Deweys progressive style of teaching, I believe it is important for teachers to engage with their students by questioning them and challenging them in their class. I am of the mindset that if teachers engage with their students more, it will inevitably result in a better learning environment for all individuals. Although there are many benefits to this style of teaching I do believe that some traditional methods such as the focus on the material being distributed to the class and that the teacher maintains control over the class are vital when trying to develop a successful learning environment. This is particularly important in the Irish education system as it is heavily based upon the Leaving Certificate. It is important that teachers do not get sidetracked and allows the students to dictate what is being thought in the class, this I believe, is the most commanding and difficult element of the progressive method of education. I also believe that education through experience plays a pivotal role in the learning capabilities of a student. I formulate this belief through the expression of Dewey; he suggests that if an educator builds up a rapport with their students and creates a sense of common ground through shared experience then their active union with each other provide the measure of the educative significance and value of an experience (Dewey, 1938). I agree with Dewey in the regard as a student can feel more engaged in the class if they can see that the teacher is being respectful towards them and their experience. I refer to my desire to be this type of teacher in week 06 of my Learning Log: i would strive to be an active teacher who asks questions, as this would indicate to the students that I truly care about what they have to say (O Connor, 2018, LL06). Asking questions and getting to know ones students is pivotal in terms of determining the academic ability of the students. As a future teacher of mathematics I would ensure that I get to know my students well in order to create a significant educational environment. I would then follow the process of Deweys experiential learning (Dewey 1938), by challenging the students, allowing them the freedom to discover what needs to be learned. While doing this it would be important as the teacher to ensure that the work being done is still on-task as there is still a course to be completed at the end of the year and the reality is that the particular course needs to be finished to give the students the best possible resources to achieve well in the state exams. Education should be available to each and every person possible. This ideology formed as a result of my reading the thoughts of Paulo Frieres Pedagogy of the Oppressed Chapter 2(Friere, 1972). My reflection of frieres thoughts of an alternative to traditional teaching is captured in week 09 of my Learning Log: Frieres Problem posing education is centred around critical thinking and making students aware of their own social reality (O Connor, 2018, LL09). I agree with this philosophy as it is an ideology that strives to make education available for everyone. This is important for me in terms of my philosophy of education as I will be teaching students of different nationalities, ethnicities and it will be my duty as a teacher to challenge these students in order to allow them to be aware of their social realities and help them understand further through challenging them in various ways. It is effectively summarised as friere states education should be known as: the practice of freedom - as opposed to the practice of dominance (Friere, 1972). This entails that education should be enjoyed and expressed openly, rather than focussed on success and fear of failure. I intend to be an educator that makes school enjoyable for students and try my best to make students feel comfortable as it will aid the main goal of creating the best learning environment possible. It is also important for an educator to acknowledge that there will always be new information and new knowledge in their particular subject area. This was highlighted to me when Postman and Weingartner announce a particular notion in Teaching as a Subversive Activity: The Vaccination theory of education (Postman and Weingartner, 1969). He suggests that some people and particularly some educators believe that once they have studied their desired subject that they feel as if they do not need to continue learning and instead focus on teaching the particular area. When in reality it is incredibly advisable for a teacher to be investing their time to be frequently expanding their knowledge and to be open to new ideas, this commitment to their own learning will inevitably benefit the learning of their students by being able to answer any question posed to them. They also depict an educator that is described as an inquiring teacher (Postman and Weingartner, 1969), I intend on being somewhat like this as I feel through reading their descriptions that this style of teaching would allow me to have a long lasting positive effect on the learning environment of the students I teach. To revert back to the progressive style of teaching mentioned previously, this inquiry based teaching would lead to a heightened level of student engagement, encourage student- student interactions and allow lessons to develop from the responses of students. Therefore it will be an ambition of mine to carry out this method of teaching to the fullest in my future as an educator of both Physical Education and Mathematics. The theory versus practice debate is a central topic when first forging a philosophy of education. It is now clear to me that they are both important in successful education. It is important not to focus too much on one particular aspect. A guest speaker in one of my lectures describes: theory should be taken as a prescription of practice (Adenusi, 2018). This effectively summarises my thoughts of this debate as I believe to be an effective educator, one must be aware of the theory behind their own subject and the theory behind how to transfer information. However, to come back to my own description of what education itself is, an educator must be adaptable and know when a particular theory of passing information is not working. People learn things and absorb information in different ways; it is up to the teacher to practically come up with a way of transferring knowledge to the student in the most effective way possible rather than sticking to a rigid theory. I reflected upon this t opic in week 02 of my Learning Log, it is more beneficial for students that are willing to learn when they have a teacher that is practically adaptable along with being theoretically up to date with teaching methods and overall knowledge (O Connor, 2018, LL02). I believe that setting up a good foundation of how I will utilise both theory and practice will contribute towards my ambition of being the best educator I can possibly be. As an aspiring Physical Education and Mathematics teacher it will be vital for me to balance both theory and practice in my profession as both subject areas are quite demanding in both respects. It is my responsibility to develop an understanding of both aspects and perform to my highest ability to allow the students I teach to gain the experience needed to succeed in their future lives To revert back to my own emerging philosophy, I hope that I can be a teacher that focuses on the wellbeing of the students through a progressive method of engaging with my students and challenging them by allowing them to have freedom over how they approach learning. However I would also hope to maintain a sense of direction in the overall process of teaching the class a desired subject as the education system relies on good performance in examinations. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2011), â€Å"Older adults who practice healthy behaviors, take advantage of clinical preventive services, and continue to engage with family and friends are more likely to remain healthy, live independently, and incur fewer health-related costs†. The main component in keeping older adults healthy is prevention of chronic illnesses and related disabilities. These chronic illnesses account for more than 60% of all deaths among older adults. Efforts to prevent or reduce the risk of disease must be explored. Throughout this paper, opportunities to promote and preserve the health of older adults will be discussed in length. The five top priorities needed in order to improve older adults’ health and quality of life are: Promotion of healthy lifestyle, increase use of preventative services, addressing cognitive impairment, screening for mental health issues, and providing education on planning for future illness. Health promotion has positive effects on healthy lifestyle and health outcomes. Healthy behaviors play a major role in preventing unnecessary disease, postponing disability, and improving quality of life for older adults. Changes in certain behaviors can prolong health and the quality of life in older adults. The maintenance and promotion of health is achieved through a combination of physical, mental, and social well-being. Older adults can improve their health by keeping physically active, getting enough sleep, eating nutritiously, limiting alcohol use, and avoiding smoking. Older adults that maintain strong social relationships, volunteer, and are active in their community also may have an increase in their longevity of health. Achieving and maintaining health is an ongoing process that is created by both the knowledge and practices of health care, as well as personal strategies for staying healthy. One area that is especially important for older adults in improving and extending their quality of life is pedestrian safety. As people get older, they can develop age-related problems such as arthritis, poor vision, and poor balance that make it harder to get around. According to the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (2011), â€Å"1 out of 3 adults aged 65 years or older falls each year. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death for this age group†. To address this public health concern, community leaders in Henderson, NC, came together to implement a program called Walk Wise, Drive Smart. The goal of this program is to make neighborhoods and surrounding areas in Hendersonville more pedestrian-friendly for older adults. For older adults, being able to walk not only promotes physical and mental well-being, bit it also helps them to stay more connected to their communities. The Walk Wise, Drive Smart program demonstrates the power of city officials and citizens working together to make policy and environmental changes to make it easier for all residents to walk safely in their communities. Preventative health services are valuable for maintaining the quality of life and wellness for older adults. Increasing the use of these services depends on the health care system’s ability to deliver appropriate preventive services, as well as the older adults’ understanding of the benefits of preventive care. â€Å"Evidence-based preventative services are effective in reducing death and disability, and are cost-effective or even cost-saving† (Greathouse, 2011). These services consist of screening tests, counseling, immunizations, medications used to prevent disease, detection of health problems early, and providing people with the information they need in order to make good decisions about their health. Preventive services are traditionally delivered in clinical settings. However, to combat the existing health gap, many of these preventive services are now being delivered within communities, work sites, schools, residential treatment centers, and homes in order to increase the use of these potentially lifesaving measures. These preventive health services are important in helping the older adults gain self confidence in their ability to control symptoms and manage the progression of several long-term and chronic illnesses. Although cognitive impairment is not an inevitable sign of aging, age is the greatest risk factor. With the rapidly increasing number of older Americans, cognitive impairment is a growing public health concern. â€Å"Recognizing signs of cognitive impairment is critical to initiating effective treatment and care as well as to distinguish dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease, from other temporary and reversible conditions that may cause loss of cognitive functioning† (Anderson, 2011). Cognitive impairment will place unprecedented demands on our existing health care system. If we are not prepared, cognitive impairment has the potential to present a tremendous economic burden. Identifying the extent and severity of functional deficits that typically occur with cognitive impairment can aid in early diagnosis, help in estimating prognosis, and improve treatment strategies† (Brown Devanand, 2011). The same practices that contribute to healthy aging and physical vitality also contribute to healthy memory. Public health efforts are critical to promote healthy behavior and extend independent life in the community. By preserving function, we can help older adults remain independent for as long as possible. This can improve their quality of life and delay the need for costly long-term care, such as community-based services or nursing home placement. With the growing number of older adults affected by cognitive impairment, it is more important than ever to implement an effective public health solution to prevent a potential crisis. Mental health is essential to overall health and well-being. As people age, a number of serious issues can have a major impact on their lives. Good health includes both physical and mental well-being. A healthy mind contributes to a healthy body. In addition to chronic disease, mental health and substance abuse problems can have a devastating impact on the lives of older adults. Physical disability, physical illness, loss or illness of a loved one, and alcohol or drug abuse may contribute to the onset of mental illness in older adults. How we  handle these changes, as well as regular day-to-day stresses, is the key to aging well. Untreated substance abuse and mental health problems among older adults are associated with poor health outcomes, higher health care utilization, increased complexity of the course and prognosis of many illnesses, increased disability and impairment, compromised quality of life, increased caregiver stress, increased mortality, and higher risk of suicide† (Whitelaw, 2011). Educating older adults on how to plan for serious illnesses and care options is the key to having peace of mind about th e future of their health. According to the AGS Foundation for Health in Aging (2009), â€Å"public health services are being developed to enhance health promotion and disease prevention throughout the life cycle that contribute to wellness, activity, and independence later in life†. These programs are important in order to improve the quality of life for older adults and their significant others by partnering with them in managing care, planning for the future, and advocating on their behalf. â€Å"Decision making regarding life-prolonging procedures when death is inevitable have become legal, ethical, medical, and professional issues today† (Touhy Jett, 2010, p. 43). Legal documents such as advanced directives, living wills, and the durable power of attorney for health care have been put in place to allow older adults to convey their decisions about end-of-life care ahead of time. These provisions provide a way for older adults to communicate their wishes to family, friends and health care pro fessionals in order to avoid confusion later on. End of life is managed much more in accordance with patients’ wishes through this system of planning the health care the older adult desires. The result is far less hospitalization, fewer ineffective treatments, and a reduction in health care costs. These areas can serve as a model for how to reform our health care system in a way that protects patients and significantly drive down costs for Medicare and the rest of healthcare. Helping older adults to live long and productive lives starts with heath prevention to improve general health, delay the onset of disability, and increase well-being. Strategies to improve the collaboration between hospitals and community based initiatives have the potential to improve quality of life and care for older adults, and to optimize health service utilization. Health promotion is needed in order to optimize outcomes, delay the onset of diseases, manage chronic illnesses, maximize function, and alleviate symptoms. Challenges involved in the growing elderly population, increasing access to care, and reducing medical costs are huge problems for the future of healthcare. The President’s healthcare reform agenda calls on all of us to be more actively engaged in maintaining and improving our own health. We all have to work together and take responsibility in educating our families, our friends, and ourselves about healthy living since the process of aging begins at birth.
